The solidarity medal is the highest award given by the Fire Brigades Union. The medal is awarded on behalf of all members of the Fire Brigades Union to recognise or dispense solidarity, or specific acts of exceptional merit.
All nominations for the solidarity medal are considered and democratically decided by the FBU Executive Council. The medal is be presented at the Annual Conference of the Fire Brigades Union.
About the medal
The medal is cast on the front with the FBU badge contained within the Fire Service star. On the rear the words ‘Fire Brigades Union 1918 Solidarity Medal’, written in FBU ‘heroic’ font, surround the rim. The centre circle is blank in order that it can be engraved with the specific details of the recipient and the act for which the medal is given.
The medal will be presented in a specially designed box which will also contain a printed FBU badge and the words ‘Solidarity Medal’ in Gold Foil on the inner lid.
In order that the award does not simply become a display piece, the Solidarity Medal will also have a silver bar contained in the box bearing a pair of crossed fire service axes. This bar will have a clasp on the rear and is designed to be worn by the recipient on the lapel/dress of the recipient or family member. The clasp can also be worn on fire service uniform if awarded to a serving uniformed member.
