Equality Matters plain logo

The Fire Brigades Union stands for equality – for an inclusive fire and rescue service, open to everyone, which reflects the communities it serves.

Discrimination, harassment and bullying have no place in our service. But recent investigations have underlined how widespread these issues are.

As FBU reps and equalities sections know first-hand, the failings go right to the top. Fire service leaders have often been part of the problem.

As the only democratic and representative body for firefighters and control room staff, we will take a leading role in transforming our service.

It’s our service, our union and our duty to make it happen.

Equality Matters.

There is stark inequality in maternity pay in the UK fire and rescue service.

Our research has found that there is currently a £15,000 pay gap between the highest-paying and lowest-paying fire services.

Firefighting is a dangerous and physically demanding. But firefighters are being forced to return to work too early because they can’t afford to live on maternity pay. This is putting their health and safety – and their children – at risk.

We are calling on UK fire and rescue services to end the postcode lottery and commit to 52 weeks full pay maternity leave.

Disabled and Neurodivergent Members' Forum

Disabled and Neurodivergent Members' Forum 2024

Our union, much like the communities our members service, includes people with minds and bodies of all kinds and functions.

Unfortunately, disabled and neurodivergent workers often face discrimination and harassment at work, as well as additional barriers and challenges caused by poor workplace policies and practices.

Our members are organising to demand a fire and rescue service that is more inclusive, where anyone can thrive without fear of discrimination or disadvantage.
