The Executive Council welcomes nominations for the award from FBU committees or FBU members. However, we cannot accept nominations from people who are not members of the Fire Brigades Union.
To make a nomination you should note that the Solidarity Medal is the highest award that the FBU can give and therefore requires a high bar to be reached.
You can nominate serving members, retired members or even people outside the Fire & Rescue Service and FBU. However, the nomination must be for a purpose which meets the following criteria:
To recognise or dispense solidarity, or specific acts of exceptional merit.
Previous recipients have included serving firefighters who have undertaken exceptional lifesaving acts or outstanding community work. In addition, the award has been given to non FBU members, such as a Professor who pioneered cancer research for firefighters, a lawyer who won pension cases on behalf of thousands of FBU members, and Politicians who have committed large parts of their career to supporting the FBU and the FRS.
Process
All nominations for the solidarity medal will be considered and decided upon by the Executive Council. All nominations must state the name of the nominee and the person/s or committee submitting the nomination.
All nominations must be made in writing and contain sufficient details of the solidarity, or specific act of solidarity of exceptional merit for which the nomination is being made.
The Executive Council will be the final decider of the award and may request further information if required. All awards of the solidarity medal will be made at FBU Annual Conference.
