Funeral of Brother Martyn Sadler – Call for One Minute Silence
I am writing to inform you of the funeral of Brother Martyn Sadler, which will take place on Thursday, 31 July, in Bicester. As you are aware, Martyn tragically lost his life in the line of duty during a fire incident in Bicester, Oxfordshire, on Thursday, 15 May 2025. Sister Jennie Logan also lost her life in this incident, along with a member of the public, David Chester.
This devastating incident has profoundly impacted everyone within and associated with the Fire & Rescue Service. In consultation with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, we are calling on all FBU members to hold a visible one-minute silence at their workplaces at 10.45am AM on the day of Martyn’s funeral, Thursday 31st July.
On that day, Martyn’s funeral procession will commence at 10:45 AM in Bicester, making its way down Queen’s Avenue towards Bicester Fire Station. To honour his memory, Martyn will be carried on London Fire Brigade’s Turntable Ladder, with the route lined by firefighters in full kit.
Following the procession, a private church service will take place for Martyn’s family, friends and colleagues by invitation only. In line with the family’s wishes, standard bearers from across the fire and rescue sector and the FBU will support in lining a route for Martyn to both enter and leave the church, lowering their flags as he passes through. The President and I will represent the FBU at this service.
In keeping with the wishes of Martyn’s family, we kindly ask for no floral tributes. For anyone who would like to make a donation, the family is directing people to support The Fire Fighters Charity. The online condolence book remains open and available to all.
As we come together to honour Martyn, we carry forward his kind heart and his passion for the fire and rescue service.
