Mental health is a real issue in the fire service and one that the FBU takes very seriously. That is why the union has published this initial guidance document.
The purpose of this document is to:
- Outline why mental health is an issue for the FBU
- What are mental health problems and the range of issues involved
- Mental health impact and equalities
- The laws relating to mental health
- FBU action on mental health at work.
It is important that fire and rescue services have a supportive policy for dealing with mental health issues. It is also important they have a sickness absence procedure that recognises the specifics of dealing with mental health issues. This initial guide has been designed to assist officials in dealing with this.
