A socialist green new deal

Conference notes the United Nations latest climate report predicting that temperatures are likely to rise by more than the vital 1.5C limit in the next two decades, bringing widespread devastation and extreme weather.

Conference applauds the work of firefighters in tackling the catastrophic effects of the climate emergency.

Conference believes, as with the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis exposes sharply the inequalities in society in the UK and internationally and we must ensure that workers are at the heart of any future programme which includes unshackling trade unions from restrictive anti- trade union legislation.

Conference instructs the Executive Council to support and campaign with organisations that share the following aims creating a ‘Socialist Green New Deal’ that will shift power from capital into the hands of workers, and will include;

• • creating millions of secure, well-paid, unionised green jobs
  • a workers-led ‘just transition’ from high emission jobs to alternatives
  • just climate adaptation, investing in Fire and Rescue Services, flood defences, and resilient infrastructure
  • retrofitting all homes by 2030 with mandatory building standards including removal of all unsafe cladding
  • public ownership of energy creating an integrated, democratic system. Large-scale investment in renewables, rapidly phasing out fossil fuels
  • public ownership of transport - majorly expanded, integrated, free, including rail electrification, high-speed rail and electric buses
  • universal basic services including Mail, Broadband, National Nature Service and National Care Service
  • repealing all anti-trade union laws, so workers can freely take industrial action over wider social and political issues, from public safety to climate change
  • a global ‘Socialist Green New Deal’, cancelling debt and freely sharing technology and resources internationally.
