Policy text
Conference notes the industrial battle Members in the West Midlands had over the attempted imposition of out-of-role work through new recruit contracts.
Conference agrees that any new work agreed by the Fire Brigades Union should be undertaken through the National Joint Council and ratified by Conference.
Conference agrees that decisions to expand the role of a firefighter into care work and patient transport is inappropriate. Social care work and patient aftercare are occupations in their own right.
Conference agrees that a Fire and Rescue Service response to slips, trips and falls and patient transport are considered inappropriate for the role of a firefighter.
Conference notes that negotiations with our employers on the expansion of the role of a firefighter are ongoing and no elements have yet been excluded by Conference.
Conference therefore instructs the Executive Council (EC) to end negotiations on any work that may require our Members to physically intervene with members of the public in the event of a non-injury slip, trip or fall incident.
Conference further instructs the EC to end negotiations on any work that may require our Members to provide post-hospital patient transport.
