Policy text
Conference notes that the current Parliamentary system does not work in the best interests of Fire Brigades Union (FBU) Members. The House of Lords is an important part of the legislative process which has seen legislation passed that negatively impacts on FBU Members.
Conference notes that the House of Lords is made up of unelected Peers.
Conference is opposed to having a chamber that is part of our democracy and law-making processes that involves unelected representatives.
Conference agrees that the House of Lords should be abolished and replaced with a smaller and democratically elected second chamber.
Conference therefore instructs the Executive Council to campaign for the abolition of the House of Lords and argue for a democratically elected second chamber.
