Policy text
A campaigning group called Memorial 07 have acquired a space for, and been granted permission in Hyde Park for a permanent memorial to the enslavement of African people. They need to raise a substantial amount of money to commission and maintain a suitable memorial. The Brent MP, Dawn Butler, launched a campaign in April 2007 to acknowledge the bicentennial of the Slave Trade Abolition Act by having an official day in commemoration of the enslavement of African people. This Conference calls upon the Executive Council to:
● Donate a sizeable donation to the permanent memorial in Hyde Park in consultation with the B&EMM National Committee.
● Research and distribute information about Memorial 07 and encourage regions to support plans for the permanent monument in commemoration of the slave trade abolition.
● Support and encourage regions to join the campaign for an official day to commemorate African enslavement.
● Continue FBU support for the Anti-Slavery movement that continues to campaign against modern slavery.
