Policy text
In this, the 60th anniversary of the 1948 ʻNakbaʼ when 800,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their land and homes, this Conference deplores the ongoing subjugation of the Palestine people. Palestinians today face not only the legacy of that injustice, but continue to suffer ongoing Israeli occupation, further illegal annexation of land and resources for Israeli settlements, strangulation of the economy, and the imposition of a system of colonial control reminiscent of apartheid. This Conference therefore demands that the Executive Council launches a high profile campaign to support the struggle of the Palestinians in their right to an internationally recognised, viable and sovereign homeland of their wishes. This campaign to include regular updates of the political, economic and welfare situation within Palestine, and promote links at all levels of the union with communities and projects working for Palestinian independence. These updates to be published in the Firefighter journal at twice yearly intervals.
