Conference welcomes the recent research undertaken by the Labour Research Department with regard to acts of violence towards firefighters and firefighters (control), and notes the comments and recommendations contained within that report. Conference is particularly concerned with the growing use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) equipment on fire appliances and vehicles as a strategy adopted by employers in violence at work policies and/or procedures. This strategy has had a counterproductive consequence of detrimentally impacting upon our neutrality within the community and in some cases increased the risk of attack on our members. Conference therefore instructs the Executive Council to enter into negotiations with the national employers as a matter of urgency, to ensure that a national violence at work protocol is pursued, with the removal of any CCTV equipment used to capture images primarily to be used in criminal prosecution procedures to be achieved as a priority. Conference instructs the Executive Council that a report on this issue is to be completed and put to FBU Annual Conference 2009 for decision.
