Policy text
Conference applauds the FBU stance in supporting a womanʼs right to choose and
thanks those Regions who have affiliated to Abortion Rights in line with past
conference resolutions. However, Conference notes that the right wing anti-choice movement is still vigorous in its campaign to ensure that they control working class women. This is being done by tabling amendments to reduce abortion time limits via the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill which had its first debate in parliament on the 12th May 2008. Over the past few weeks, MPs have been bombarded with propaganda from the anti-choice movement which is drumming up support for an attack on the 24 week Abortion time limit. Due to a change in the timetable for when amendments will be debated, Abortion Rights have had to organise an emergency demonstration outside parliament on the evening of Tuesday 20th May 2008. To assist Abortion Rights in its campaign against this underhanded attack on a womanʼs right to choose, Conference calls upon the Executive Council to:
● Re-affirm Conference Policy by producing an article for Firefighter regarding this fresh round of attacks on a womanʼs right to choose;
● Encourage regions and individuals to affiliate to Abortion Rights by filling in an affiliation form today;
● Encourage Regions to make a one off donation to boost the current funds of Abortion Rights.
