Deaths In Police Custody

This Conference welcomes the recent Coroner's Court verdict of "unlawful killing" by police officers of Roger Sylvester. The verdict vindicates the Roger Sylvester Justice Campaign and the support given by sections of the Fire Brigades Union. The hearing highlighted the brutal way that members of the black population are treated by police officers and the lengths the Metropolitan Police will go to cover up their brutality. We demand that B&EMM and the Fire Brigades Union give full support to tackling deaths in custody by affiliating to the "United Family and Friends Campaign" ii. The Fire Brigades Union and the TUC to use their good offices to ensure that the police officers implicated in the death of Roger are swiftly brought to justice iii.
