A devastating fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu, Turkey has killed at least 76 people.
The fire erupted in the ski resort in the early hours of Tuesday morning and rapidly engulfed the 12-story building, which was occupied by 234 guests at the time. It took 12 hours for firefighters to extinguish.
Nine people have been arrested, including the hotel's owner.
Steve Wright, Fire Brigades Union general secretary, said:
The Fire Brigades Union sends its condolences and thoughts to all those affected by the horrific fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel, Turkey, as well as to the firefighters who responded to it.
While an investigation is ongoing, this tragic incident underlines the importance of proper building regulation and fire safety procedures, as well as the fire service’s ability to arrive quickly at incidents.
We will be contacting firefighting unions in Turkey to offer support and solidarity.”
