Steve Wright elected as new FBU Vice President

Steve Wright, FBU vice president, addresses TUC congress 2023

Brother Steve Wright has been elected as the Fire Brigades Union Vice President, following a period of six months as acting Vice President

Steve has been an FBU member for over 20 years. Having joined Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2001 at the age of 18, Steve transferred to Oxfordshire fire and rescue in 2006.

A dedicated FBU activist, Steve has represented members in many roles during his journey from branch rep to Vice President of the union, and has extensive experience representing members on a range of issues.

Having lost his father, who joined the fire service in the 1970s, as well as a number of family, friends and colleagues to cancer, protecting firefighters from this threat is a number one priority to Steve.

Steve has led Region 12 (Southern) since its creation, from being a concept to being a pro-active and effective region. He has played an important role in developing new members into the next generation of activists, reps, and officials.

He has committed to upholding the role of Vice President with integrity, diligence and a dedication to unity, putting FBU members first.

Speaking after his election, Steve said:

“I am honoured to be elected as the FBU’s Vice President and look forward to working alongside all FBU members in the pursuit of our union's industrial and political objectives. Together, we can achieve great things.

“The past year has been an incredibly busy period for all officials and reps. We have run a fierce pay campaign, which mobilised thousands of firefighters but we have many battles ahead that we need to organise for.

“I will endeavour to ensure I remember my roots that shaped me as a firefighter, my roots that gave me the motivation to stand up for firefighters, and to members who now put their trust in me to continue representing them, by remaining committed to the grassroots of our union - firefighters and control firefighters on the front line.

“As we face the challenges that lie ahead, it is imperative that we remain united. Together, we are stronger and better equipped to overcome any obstacles that come our way.”
