The Fire and Rescue service includes people with minds and bodies of all kinds and functions.
Unfortunately, disabled and neurodivergent workers face significant barriers and challenges in the workplace, including discrimination and harassment, operational safety risks, disproportionate rates of discipline and capability procedures, and inaccessible pathways for promotion.
This course has been designed to give reps the skills, knowledge, and confidence to represent and advocate for our disabled and neurodivergent members, so that physical or neurological difference is never a barrier to a long, successful, and safe career.
Participants attending the course will learn to:
- confidently talk about disability & neurodiversity and challenge misconceptions
- understand the difficulties and hidden barriers that workplace practices can cause
- know and use what the law says, including the Equality Act 2010
- negotiate reasonable adjustments effectively
- understand collective approaches and advocate for policies based on the social model of disability
- identify the key health, safety and welfare issues caused by exclusionary policies and practices
- sensitively handle concerns around disclosure and support members through screening/diagnosis
