Dear Brother/Sister

Updated Circular: Fire Brigades Union reaches settlement in injury to feelings claims

Important: This circular replaces the previous circular sent 31 October 2022. The survey has now been updated to include email and telephone contact details. If you completed the survey that did not include the request for your email or telephone contact number then please complete the survey again.

Circular 2022HOC0512MW reported that the union has reached a settlement with the Government regarding the injury to feelings claims made by members of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme 1992 who were required to transfer to the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme 2015, in circumstances that we now know to be discriminatory and unlawful.

There are two issues that now need to be dealt with for these members.

  • To put the settlement into effect we need up-to-date information regarding members’ details. This information was originally collected in 2015 and 2020, and it may have changed if members have moved house, got married or divorced and changed their name, or changed their email addresses or phone numbers.

  • A large number of members have contacted us because they are not sure if they completed the survey in 2015 or in 2020. We have the output of both surveys, but cannot release them to everyone for data-protection reasons.

If you are in this position, and if you provide us with some basic information we will be able to check if you completed the previous surveys using IT rather than answer a long stream of telephone calls or emails. We have therefore created another short survey to collect or update this information we need.

You will be able to find it here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/8X56QHX

If:

  • You completed the previous surveys; or
  • If you are not sure if you did

Please complete this now.

PLEASE NOTE: we need you to answer all of the questions. Please don’t leave blanks. If, for instance, you don’t have a home email address please say “none” rather than just moving on to the next question.

You will need to have this information to hand before starting the survey. In particular, one of the questions asks for your national insurance number, which we need to make a match to the previous surveys. Please have it ready before you start.

Yours in unity,

Mark Rowe
National Officer
